Andrew Jackson Cales 
Andrew Jackson was born on February 9th, 1836 in Monroe Co., Virginia.1 Andrew Jackson's father was John Cales and his mother was Kesiah Meadows. His maternal grandparents were John Meadows and Elizabeth Wyant. He had a brother, and also a sibling of unknown gender named Parkison and ?. He was the second oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 90 on November 26th, 1926 in Winfield, Cowley Co., Kansas. He was buried in Salem Cemetery, Cowley Co., Kansas.1 1 General Notes

The patriarch of the successful Cales family i n Kansas and Oklahoma had a difficult and poor childhood. When he was four or f ive years old, his mother - Kisiah - became ill and invalided. His father - Joh n Cales - took he and his older brother - Parkison - from Monroe County, Virgin ia* to Indiana with another woman - Catherine Meadows, who may have been Kisiah 's sister. Late in life, Jackson remembered his mother screaming while holding an infant as they left.
In Indiana, John and Catherine would have several mo re children. Jackson complained that they were mean to him and he had to wear s acks on his feet instead of shoes. He was unable to attend school, staying home to care for the younger children and do chores. As a result, Jack did not lear n to read or write.
By the time he was 21, they had moved to Iroquois County , Illinois and were sued over a dispute as to whether Jackson had failed to del iver the season's contracted corn. Involved were lost work time and a pair of b oots.
On Valentine's Day 1864, Jackson married Elizabeth Ellen Fry. Unlike his father, Jack would stay with Elizabeth until her death in 1918. By 1870, th ey had four children.
In 1876, they moved to Burden, Kansas, to join others of the Frys, and eventually purchased a farm 8 to 10 miles northeast of Winfie ld, Kansas, living there until after 1900, when Jackson retired from farming an d sold the farm. A 1905 plat map shows Jackson Cales owning the southeast quart er of Section 36 (just south of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad) Range 5 East, Richland Township (#36).
About 1915, Ellen had a stroke and they mo ved to a house in Winfield which had the advantage of being near the Methodist church. He took daily walks and wore a long beard, which shows in the photo. It was about this time that Ellen took up Christian Science and young Edith also.
He died at the age of 90, eight years after Ellen. He was remembered as a g entle, good-nautred man.
*This is in that northwestern part of Viriginia whi ch seceded from the state to become West Virginia, a pro-Union state, when Virg inia seceded from the Union in the lead-up to the Civil War.
