He was the only son of Thomas, and was the "First Lord Semple," raised toPeerage (a position of nobility, baron) by James IV in 1488, probablyafter his father was killed in battle (according to Crawford). He sat asa Peer in Parliament on 18 March 1503 to 1504. He was the Sheriff ofRenfrew and ambassador to the court of Henry VII of England and received20 pounds for his expenses. When James IV visited Paisley in 1504, thereis a notice of 14 shillings given to "Lord Simpill's harpar".
Confirmation Charter of 1505 of lands in force, barony of Sempill makesmention of lands in Kilboch. He erected or rather rebuilt the castle ofCastleton, which he renamed Castle-Semple, at the eastern end of theLoch. He also built and founded the Collegiate Church of Lochwinnoch in1505 in the glen which was endowed with revenue from the Sempillpossessions in Kilbauchen. It was founded "to the honour of God and theblessed Virgin Mary, for the prosperity of his sovereign, James IV, andMargaret, his queen, for the soul of Margaret Colville, his formerspouse; and also for the salvation of his own soul and that of MargaretCrichen, his present wife, and all his predecessors and successors, andof all the faithful deceased." and was confirmed by King James IV atEdinburgh on 5 June 1506. Lord Semple gave a large revenue to maintain aprebend and six chaplains. His family was buried there.
John was killed at the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513. A monumentto him was erected in the Collegiate Church and can be still seen on thenorth side of the ruined (roofless) church.
He and Margaret Crichton had no children.
