In a two room log house in Herriman, Salt Lake, Utah, I was born to Robert Dansie and Roseina Silcock, on April 2, 1876.  They named me Charlotte Jane.  We comfortable fixed in this small house.  My father was a sheep and stockman.  On March 12, 1878 my brother, Robert Moroni, was bornand everything went along fine until the fall of 1879 when my mother died, leaving two small children motherless, taking the third child with her soon after his birth on Oct. 10, 1879, Alma.  I was three and a half years old when she passed away.  My father sold his place in Herriman and sent my brother and myself to Grandmothers (my maternal grandmother, Silcock) and went to the sheepherd.  In six months time, when I was four years old, I had black measles, and I was so ill they thought I would die, but with plenty of good nursing I recovered.  When I was well enough to ride in the wheel barrow my four uncles....(?)

In the fall of 1880 my father married Paulina Silcock, my mother's sister, and in the fall of 1881 when I was five and one half years old, her first baby was born, a boy and I enjoyed taking care of him. The next summer we went to Idaho to sheepherd.

I remember when I was quite small that we were living on a farm, at least we did not have visitors very often.  I ran in the house one day and said, "Aunt Polly, there are some little boys and girls coming to see me."  Aunt Polly went to look and said, "my goodness, they are Indians."  She did not like to have the Indians come, as it frightened her, but she gave them something to eat and they went on their way.

When old enough I started to Primary and to school, and when I was eight years of age I was baptized on the 5th of June 1884 by Christian Petersen and confirmed by Samuel Howard the same day.

When I was ten we went to my uncles in Herriman.  I don't remember playing games, I always went to Sunday School.  I was eleven when I learned the catechism cards.  I got a lot of cards for attendance.  When I was twelve I helped knit stockings for the family and when I went to school I croched (sic) at recess instead of playing.

As I got larger (14 and up) we always had a riding horse and one to drive in the buggy and cart.  When I was sevnteen.  I joined the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association and started going to dances.  We would have plays and home dramatics.  I was treasurer in the M.I.A. about two years, from 1891 to 1893.  In February 1893 there were two girls and myself went to Salt Lake City to take a course in the Young Ladies Guide, when it was first started.  The coursee was given in the L.D.S. College by Brothers Done and Talmage.  We had to carry the instructions back to our Ward.

I was teacher in the First Intermediate Class in Sunday School.  This class consisted of girls and I taught them from January 1896 to Jan 1897(at that time they changed teachers every year.)

We always had shows in the winter and went sleigh riding.  We had parties, Ward Reunions to which we took our lunch.  We girls would set the tables and take care of the dishes and put them back in the right baskets.   We would also go all day to different homes and sew carpet rags.  The people would give us our dinner and supper.  We surely had good times.

At a dance my cousin, Edith Bates, and I attended at Riverton, she made me acquainted with a man in the orchestra, playing the flute.  This man, David Edward Shelly, later became my husband, on 28 of April 1898.  We were married at Riverton and came over to American Fork, Utah to live.  We went through the Salt Lake Temple for our endowments on the 28th of November 1898.

On May 4th, 1899 our first child, a girl, was born.  We lived in the old Shelley home.  We named her Roseina, after my mother.  When Rose was a very small girl she had diphtheria and was very ill.
