Charles was born on January 31st, 1716 in Chesterfield, Va, Virginia, Virginia. Charles' father was Henry CLAY and his mother was Mary MITCHELL. His paternal grandparents were Charles CLAY and Hannah WILSON; his maternal grandfather was William MITCHELL and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth INNES. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William Mitchell, William Mitchell, Henry, John, John, Amey, Martha, Amey and Mary. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
