Matthew was born on July 11th, 1811 in , Perry Co, Oh. Matthew's father was John Calvin CLAYTON and his mother was Mary BROWN. His paternal grandfather was Thomas CLAYTON and his paternal grandmother is Mary Walker; his maternal grandfather was Alexander BROWN and his maternal grandmother is Mary UNKNOWN. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Alexander, Samuel, John B, Joseph, David Moore, James P, Isaac and Eliza. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 77 on August 9th, 1888 in , Perry County, Oh. He was buried in Unity Presb, Clayton Twp, Perry Co, Oh.General Notes
