Joseph was born on August 9th, 1813 in , Musk/perry Co, Oh. Joseph's father was John Calvin CLAYTON and his mother was Mary BROWN. His paternal grandfather was Thomas CLAYTON and his paternal grandmother is Mary Walker; his maternal grandfather was Alexander BROWN and his maternal grandmother is Mary UNKNOWN. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Alexander, Samuel, John B, Matthew, David Moore, James P, Isaac and Eliza. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
