Richard Anderson is by rumor and family tradition supposed to be the
ancestor of the ANDERSON families of the James River. How much of this
is family tradition passed down and how much was made up by early
researchers looking at ship lists I can't be certain by examining the
published literature. I have not seen a presentation of strong evidence
of this association in the sources I have seen. This Richard appears
on the passenger list for the Merchant's Hope in 1635 and his age is
listed as 50. What happened to him when he got to Virginia is
undocumented. Several writers claim he arrived in Virginia after sending
his sons the year before. How many sons depends upon which writer you
read. The London marriage record was added by another researcher
writing in the 1960's.
