Martha was born on February 28th, 1842 in , Dodridge Co., West Virginia. Martha's father was Uriah ASHCRAFT and her mother is Fannie Marie DYE. Her paternal grandfather was Ezekiel ASHCRAFT and her paternal grandmother is Hester OATLEY; her maternal grandparents are Walter DYE and Agnes FORD. She had six brothers and five sisters, named James (John) M., Walter, William M., George, J. Buchannon, Buchannon, Mary, Charlotte, Agnes, Mary and Charlotte.
