Alias: Lothaire King of /Italy/ Lothar began rule in 817 as co-Emperor with his father, Louis the Pious, as well as king of Italy, replacing King Bernard. Things went well with the family until 823 when Louis the Pious had another son, Charles, by his wife, Judith. Lothar's mother had died sometime about 817 and Louis the Pious remarried. Conflict began when Louis the Pious tried to change his will and work Charles in as a successor. Lothar and his brothers, Pepin of Aquitaine and Louis of Bavaria, fought their father everytime he attempted to make Charles an heir of the empire. In 829, Lothar was stripped of his imperial title and sent packing to Italy. The next year, the brothers attacked their father, reinstated Lothar with his imperial title, and had Judith sent to a nunnery. However, one short year after that, in 831, Louis the Pious had regained his power, brought back his wife, and again dropped Lothar's titles--this time all of them--and refused him to return to court again without permission. That year, Pepin revolted and in 832, Louis of Bavaria joined Pepin. Emperor Louis declared Pepin deposed of all royal titles, but he had no power to enforce this declaration. Lothar joined his brothers in 833 and the three again attacked their father with support from Louis' own generals and from Pope Gregory IV. They imprisoned their father and brother, Charles, and exiled Judith to Italy under watch of Lothar. By 834, peace was made between Louis the Pious and his three oldest sons. He was re-crowned emperor in 835. Louis the Pious died in 840 and the following year, in 841, Charles and Louis of Bavaria ganged up on Lothar. Lothar defeated them at Fontenay, France. Finally, in 843, the Treaty of Verdun was made between the three brothers by which Charles would rule the Western Frankish Kingdom (France and Aquitaine), Louis would rule the Easter Frankish Kingdom (Germany), and Lothar would rule the Middle Frankish Kingdom of Italy, Provence, and Lorraine and keep the imperial title.[Adalbert I King Of Italy.ged]
