Her paternal grandparents were John Bangs and Jane Chavis; her maternal grandparents were Edmund Hobart and Margaret Dewey. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Joshua, Jonathan, Bethia, Apphia, Mercy, Rebecca, Sarah and Lydia. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had a half-sister named Sarah.
