His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Kennedy Sr. and Mrs. Gilbert Kennedy; his maternal grandparents were Robert Maxwell Laird of Pollock and Mrs. Robert Maxwell. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Alexander, Hugh, John, David and Euphame. He was the second youngest of the seven children.-
