Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert Kennedy Sr. and Mrs. Gilbert Kennedy; her maternal grandparents were Robert Maxwell Laird of Pollock and Mrs. Robert Maxwell. She had six brothers named James, Alexander, Hugh, John, Thomas and David. She was the oldest of the seven children.-
