William I was born about 1049 in Brienze,Normandy,France.1   William I's father was Robert de BRUSSE and his mother was Emma de Bretagne.  His paternal grandparents were Ragnvald (Rognvald) II Brusesson [EARL OF ORKNEY] and Arlogia Vladimirovna Countess of Orkney; his maternal grandparents were Alain III Bretagne duke and Mathilde de Gand. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Allan, Adam, Robert, Robert I, Philina, Hortolina, Amicia and Agatha.  He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Roger.  He died in 1087 in Bramber,Sussex,England.2

They had three sons and four daughters, named Philip, Adam, John, Matilde, daughter , dame d'Harcourt, Miss and Hortense.
