Baron William I De Braose 1st Lord of Bramber 
William I was born about 1049 in Brienze,Normandy,France.1 William I's father was Robert de BRUSSE and his mother was Emma de Bretagne. His paternal grandparents were Ragnvald (Rognvald) II Brusesson [EARL OF ORKNEY] and Arlogia Vladimirovna Countess of Orkney; his maternal grandparents were Alain III Bretagne duke and Mathilde de Gand. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Allan, Adam, Robert, Robert I, Philina, Hortolina, Amicia and Agatha. He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Roger. He died in 1087 in Bramber,Sussex,England.2 General Notes
Guillaume de Briouze is recorded in lists of those present at the Battle of Hastings. He became the first Lord of the Bramber Rape by 1073 and built Bramber Castle. William made considerable grants to the abbey of Saint Florent, Saumur to endow the foundation of Sele Priory near Bramber and a priory at Briouze. He continued to fight alongside King William in the campaigns in Britain, Normandy, and Maine.

William de Braose came into England with the Conqueror and held, at the general survey, considerable estates in the counties of Berks, Wilts, Surrey, Dorset, and Sussex. (Research):Brydges edition of Collins' Peerage claims that he was first married to Agnes, dau of Waldron de Saint Clare, but no evidence for this can be found.
