His paternal grandparents were Adam de Brus and Emma de Ramsay; his maternal grandparents were Fulk Paganell and Beatrice FITZWILLIAM. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Adam I, Pagon de, Agatha and Lucy de. He was the second oldest of the five children.
