John was 70 years old when they took Damitta on the east bank of the Nile River in the fifth crusade. He was on the fifth crusade. He was poor when he left Germany and the pope and others gave him the money he needed to go to the crusade and marry the queen of Jerusalem. He was a great general but the pope sent Palagenus to be the religiors arm of the crusade in order to see that christian standards were maintained. They didn't get along as John wanted to accept the offer of the Sultan, to return Egypt and be given Jerusalem, but Palagius of Albano refused thinking that more help was comming from Europe. As it turned out they were unable to conquer Egypt and in the end had to conceed to a settlement. St Francis of Assisi showed up and when he went to Egypt he was going to convert Islam to christianity. They were not impressed with him and gave gifts to him and dismissed him to go on his way. John went to Europe in 1222 to get support as he needed more men to govern Jerusalem. He was also looking for a husband for Yulanda, who was now 11.
