John Baliol King of Scotland 
John was born about 1249 in Bernard Castle,Gainford,Durham,England.1 John's father was John De Baliol LORD OF BARNARD CASTLE and his mother was Dervorgilla De Galloway. His paternal grandparents were Hugh De Baliol Lord of Barnard Castle and Cecily De La Fontaine; his maternal grandparents were Alan McDonald De Galloway Lord of Galloway and Margaret of Huntington. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Hugh De, Alexander De, Alan De, William De, Cecilia De, Eleanor De, Mary De, Ada De, Euphemia De, Baliol and Margaret De. He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children. He died in Bailleul,Nord,France. He was buried in St Waast,Bailleul,Nord,France.1 1 General Notes

John de Baliol, 1249-1315, king of Scotland (1292-96), claimed the throne at the death of MARGARET MAID OF NORWAY. EDWARD I of England supported him over ROBERT I in return for feudal overlordship, and he was crowned. In 1296 he renounced his oath of fealty, was defeated, and surrendered to Edward. He was imprisoned until 1299, when he retired to France.

d. 1269, English nobleman; founder of Balliol College, Oxford. A regent for ALEXANDER III of Scotland, he was removed from office and later fought for HENRY III of England in the BARONS' WAR. His third son, John de Baliol, 1249-1315, king of Scotland (1292-96), claimed the throne at the death of MARGARET MAID OF NORWAY. EDWARD I of England supported him over ROBERT I in return for feudal overlordship, and he was crowned. In 1296 he renounced his oath of fealty, was defeated, and surrendered to Edward. He was imprisoned until 1299, when he retired to France. His son, Edward de Baliol, d. 1363, king of Scotland, invaded Scotland (1332) with the aid of EDWARD III and defeated supporters of DAVID II. After David's return from France (1341), he never held power.
