His paternal grandparents were Hugh De Baliol Lord of Barnard Castle and Cecily De La Fontaine; his maternal grandparents were Alan McDonald De Galloway Lord of Galloway and Margaret of Huntington. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Alexander De, John, Alan De, William De, Cecilia De, Eleanor De, Mary De, Ada De, Euphemia De, Baliol and Margaret De.
