Her maternal grandparents were John William Douglas and Margaret Mozelle McNeil. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Stacy Earl, William Everette, DeLeon Douglas, Samuel Jerome, Jr., Edna Mae, Ruby Lee, Ruth Gladys and Mozelle Catherine.
