His paternal grandparents were Willoughby Sims Pugh and Elizabeth Pheebe Rushing; his maternal grandparents were John Wilks and Mary Gulledge. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William Carvin, John Cleveland, Robert Lee, Arthur Sims, Wiley Wilks, Horace Hood, Cleone and Anna Marie. He was the oldest of the nine children.
