According to Mrs. Knox Hammond, Jim was killed by run away steers.
Something went wrong with the harness or rig, and Jim stepped out on the
tongue of the wagon to fix or correct it. His movement apparently
startled the animals, he was caught up in the harness or rig and was drug
to his death. No one knew of the accident until the steers finally
returned home with Jim's mangled body still hung. The back of his head
was missing. Aunt Lillie Miller Bennet and Uncle Tam Miller recalled
have heard a similar story about their grandfather when I (W. O. Miller,
Sr.) told them that Mrs. Hammond had related the story to me on 13 Jan
1975.
On June 22, 1997 Ron, Eunice, Melissa, & Rachel Bridges, road to
Bentleyville, Coosa, Alabama, where Bryce Miller's farm is located. Bryce
was in an old truck and parked under a large oak tree. While sitting in
his truck, he informed us that he heard a story from the older Millers
about the tragic death of James Miller. James was driving steers down a
dirt road to Hatchett Creek. His legs became entangled into the harness
and the steers spooked. He was drug to his death. It was hours later
that anyone knew of the death. His body was drug home.
