Five years ago J. A. Hill became associated with Jno. D. Rogers of
Galveston in farming on the Brazon, some eight miles from Navasota. He
farmed there three years, when he took the black jaundice and died, on
the 12th Aug. 1889. This country lost her greatest man on his death. He
was an intellectual giant. Elmere [sic] still lives at her old home with
her young children. She has had eleven children, losing two infants. The
most of her children are grown and very intelligent. (letter - June 10/92)

July 24, 1844, married Mary Elmore Lewis on May 20, 1866. J. A. Hill
owned a Jersey Farm at New Waverly, Texas. At the time of his death on
August 12, 1889, was manager of Allen Farm located near Navasota, Texas
