His paternal grandparents were Robert* Jackson, Sr. Garrett and Mary* Ann Clackler; his maternal grandparents were Archibald* Rials and Elizabeth* Green. He had four brothers and a sister, named Joshua, William Thomas, James Pinson, John M. and Mary J. He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named James Pinson.
