Her paternal grandparents were Archelas Elmore and Susannah Morris; her maternal grandparents were Warner Phillip Williams and Frances Hundley. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Warner, Mary Williams, Nancy Ellison, Sally Wilkinson, Susannah and Elizabeth W.. She was the second youngest of the eight children.
