His paternal grandparents were John Bryant Castellow and Amy Hill McClendon; his maternal grandparents were John Dismukes and Mary Wilson. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William Franklin, Stephen Thomas, Benjamin Jordan, Robert Fleming, John Broadus, Mary E., Elizabeth Rebecca, Cordelia, Susanah and Anna Vera.
