In 1820, James drew lot no. 101, Section 3, Irwin Co., GA. The 1825 Tax
Digest Washington Co., GA, indicates she paid tax on 490 acres, Irwin
Co., Georgia. James and his family moved to Henry Co., GA in 1835 from
Washington Co., GA.
On August 8, 1850 the Federal census shows Sarah ArnoldCastellaw is
in Henry Co., GA with her children Jane, Andrew Jackson, Francis and
Caroline. James is not listed on the census record taken on that day.
Deed book M for Henry Co., GA does show a James and a J. B. Castellow
as witnesses on December 10, 1850.
On June 26, 1860, in Lavaca Co., TX James is listed with Sarah as
well as Andrew Jackson and Francis.
Lavaca County court records show transactions by James G. and Sarah
being made on September 7, 1853. This was the first Castellow that
brought six of his children to Lavaca Co.,TX. He left some of his
children in Georgia.
By 1850, the family was living in Lavaca Co., Texas. Indenture dated
June 11, 1850, indicates James bought 256 acres of land on Rocky Creek,
Lavaca Co., TX. In the 1860 census, the family was living in
Hallettsville, pg 349.
Lavaca County courthouse records show that James and Sarah Castellow
sold an undivided 1/4 of their Lavaca Co. homestead to their son, William
H. Castellow on September 7, 1853. Later that same year they gave the
remaining 3/4 of the homestead to sons James B. Castellow, Andrew Jackson
Castellow and Francis M. Castellow. On January 20, 1854 they gave their
personal property of "horses, cattle, hogs, household goods, etc. to
Andrew Jackson, Francis M., Martha Jane "Dolly" and Rachel Caroline
Castellow. It appears that James and Sarah were getting their estate in
order for something, perhaps his pension for the War of 1812, although
Sarah lived almost 13 mores years(1867) and James lived for almost 25
mores years (1878). In 1870, according to the Lavaca Co. census James was
living alone, page 485.
