Sir William was born in 1240 in of Groby, Leicestershire, England.  Sir William's father was William de Ferrers III Earl of Derby and his mother was Margaret de Quincy.  His paternal grandparents were William de Ferrers II Earl of Derby and Agnes le Meschines of Chester; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy Earl of Winchester and Helen MacDonald de Galloway. He had a brother and four sisters, named Robert de Ferrers, Agnes, Elizabeth, Joan and Berta. He had a half-brother and eight half-sisters, named Sir John, Agnes, Isabel, Sybil, Joane, Agatha, Eleanor, Maud and Vyvien.  He died at the age of 47 on December 20th, 1287.
