Joan was born in 1255 in of Derbyshire, England.  Joan's father was William de Ferrers III Earl of Derby and her mother was Margaret de Quincy.  Her paternal grandparents were William de Ferrers II Earl of Derby and Agnes le Meschines of Chester; her maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy Earl of Winchester and Helen MacDonald de Galloway. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert de Ferrers, Sir William, Agnes, Elizabeth and Berta. She had a half-brother and eight half-sisters, named Sir John, Agnes, Isabel, Sybil, Joane, Agatha, Eleanor, Maud and Vyvien.


Joan's family with Sir Thomas de Berkeley Lord Berkeley

‌Joan and Sir Thomas de Berkeley were married in a religious ceremony in 1267.  They had four sons and three daughters, named Thomas, John, Sir Maurice de Berkeley, James, Alice, Isabel and Margaret.
