John Stanley 
John was born in 1383 in Lathom, Lancashire, England. John's father was John De Stanley and his mother was Isabel De Lathom. His paternal grandparents were William De Stanley and Alice De Massey; his maternal grandparents were Thomas De Lathom and Isabella Pilkington. He had two brothers named Thomas De Stanley Baron and George. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 61 in 1444.General Notes
John Stanley was Knight of the Shire, Constable of Carnarvon, Justice of Chester and Sheriff of Anglesley. He was a brave and valiant gentleman, who was one of the Captains under James, Lord Audley, at the famous Battle of Poiters in France, which was fought on September 19, 1357, by Edward, the Black Prince, son of Edward III, wherein John, King of France, was taken prisoner and brought captive to England. In the 10th year of Richard II he was made Constable of Windsor Castle and Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. He was Lord Deputy of Lteland in 1385 and in 1405 having taken possession of the Isle of Man he obtained a grant in fee of the said isle castle and pile and all the isles adjacent. We branch off from the main line of Stanleys with this John but this offshoot in power and splendour has overshadowed the parent stock. Sir John Stanley was a cool, shrewd and efficient man, who in a literal sense of the word flourished in the reigns and Richard II and Henry IV and V and whose personal qualities raised him to distinction, while the properties he acquired in right of his marriage gave him great territorial influence in Lancashire and elsewhere. In the War of the Roses he was shrewd enough to keep both sides in favor, and when Harry of Monmouth, Shakespeare's "nimble-footed madcap Harry," succeeded as Henry V he was made Knight of the Garter.
