Her paternal grandparents were Edmund 1st Baron de Stafford , MP, Sir and Margaret Basset; her maternal grandparents were Hugh Baron de Audley , 1st Earl of Gloucester and Margaret de Clare , Countess of Gloucester. She had a brother and three sisters, named Hugh, Joan de, Elizabeth de and Katherine de. She was the second oldest of the five children. She had two half-sisters named Margaret de and Jane de.
