John de was born about 1200 in Shirland, Derbyshire, England.  John de's father was Henry de Grey , Lord of Codnor and his mother was Isolda Bardolf.  His paternal grandparents were John de Grey , of Thurrock and Elana de Clare; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Bardolf , Lord of Waddington, Sir and Isabel de Condet. He had two brothers named Richard de and Hugh de.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
