John 1st Baron de was born about 1326 in Eaton Hastings, Faringdon, Berkshire, England. John 1st Baron de's father was John de St. Philbert , of Eaton, Sir and his mother was Ada de Botetourte. His paternal grandparents were Hugh de St. Philbert , of Sulham, Sir and Alice; his maternal grandparents were John 1st Baron de Botetourte , Sir and Maud FitzThomas , Heiress of Mendlesham. He had two sisters named Margaret de and Maud de. He was the second oldest of the three children. He died on September 3rd, 1358 in (overseas).General Notes
BARONY OF SAINT PHILIBERT (I)
JOHN DE SAINT PHILIBERT, son and heir, was aged 6 on 6 January 1332/3. In 1345, before he was of age, he was illegally arrested, when on pilgrimage, at Pisa, being released only in 1347; in that year he was in the retinue of the Prince of Wales in France, and was serving in France and Gascony 1348, 1349, 1355, 1356 and 1358. He did homage for his lands 11 January 1347/8. He was summoned to Parliament 20 November 1348 by writ addressed Johanni de Sancto Philiberto, which Parliament was twice postponed, St. Philibert being re-summoned for each postponement (but never afterwards), whereby he is held to have become LORD ST. PHILIBERT.
He appears to have married, 1stly, when a child of 4, Joan, daughter of Robert (DE UFFORD), LORD UFFORD, afterwards created EARL OF SUFFOLK, by Margaret, sister to John de Norwich to whose grandson John her issue ultimately became heirs, widow of Thomas (DE CAILLY), LORD CAILLY, and daughter of Sir Walter DE NORWICH. He married, 2ndly, before 3 September 1347, when she was aged 18, Margaret, elder sister and coheir of Edmund (DE ST. JOHN), LORD ST. JOHN (of Basing), and daughter of Hugh, LORD ST. JOHN, by Mirabel his wife, and died overseas, 3 September 1358, having alienated at least the bulk of his own inheritance to the Crown, in possession or in reversion. A word about the name "St. Philbert". I find numerous references to the name "St. Philibert" and "St. Philbert". As far as I can determine they are two different spellings for the same family. I find the same people spelled with either spelling. Even the original saint (died 684) that the family is presumed to be named after, I find spelled both ways.
