General Notes

Henry was 3rd Earl of Lancaster, and a member of Parliament, was born about 1281 and died Sep t 22, 1348.  He was buried with great ceremony on the North side of the alter of Newark Abbey , Leicester, where his obsequies were attended by the King and Queen in person.  He was a dis tinguished soldier in the Scottish wars, and had livery of his lands in the 17 year of Edwar d 11., and was restored to the dignity of Earl of Leicester.  This prince was subsequently on e of the leaders in the great confederacy which over turned the power of the Spencers, and de posed King Edward II.  Upon the accession of King Edward III, the earl had the honor of girdi ng him with the sword of knighthood, and as soon as the new monarch was crowned he was appoin ted, the king being a minor, his gardian.  After which in the parliament begun in Westminster , the attainder against his brother, being reversed, he was restored to all the lands of hi s father and brother, with the Earldoms of Lancaster, and Leicester, and the same year, the f irst year of EdwardIII, he constituted captain-general of all the king's forces in the marche s of Scotland,  He married on March 2, 1296 Maud Chaworth, daughter of Patric Chaworth and hi s wife Isabel Beauchamp.  Maud died before December 3, 1322, and was burried at Mottisfont Pr iory, of which she was a patron.  They had three daughters as follows.
