Katherine was born about 1397 in Raby Castle, Durham, England. Katherine's father was Ralph de Neville , KG, 1st Earl Westmorland and her mother was Joan Beaufort. Her paternal grandparents were John 3rd Baron de Neville , of Raby, KG, Sir and Maud de Percy; her maternal grandfather was John Plantagenet of Gaunt , Duke of Lancaster. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Richard, George, Edward, Eleanor, Anne and Cecily de. She was the oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Ralph de, Maud (Mathilda) de, Philippa de and Mary de.-
