William 1st Baron was born on September 24th, 1277 in Denham, Hartismere, Suffolk, England. William 1st Baron's father was John Marshal , of Hockering, Marshal of Ireland and his mother was Hawise. His paternal grandparents were William Marshal , of Hingham & Hockering, Sir and Elizabeth de Ferrers. He was an only child. BARONY OF MARSHAL (I)
WILLIAM MARSHAL, son and heir, was born at Denham, Suffolk, on or about 24 September 1277. He was summoned for military service in Flanders in 1297, and to successive expeditions against the Scots from 1298 to 1310. Though he was not among those summoned to the Parliament at Lincoln in February 1300/1, his seal (as Dominus de Hengham) is affixed to the letter sent by the Barons to the Pope on behalf of themselves and the community of the realm of England. In February 1307/8 he carried the great golden spurs at the Coronation of Edward II. He was summoned to Parliament from 8 January 1308/9 to 26 November 1313, by writs directed WilleImo le Mareschal, whereby he is held to have become LORD MARSHAL. In 1310 he was one of the committee of six Barorns, by whom the remaining Lords Ordainers were elected; the following year he was forbidden to come to Parliament armed, on account of his quarrel with Nicholas de Segrave.
He married Christian, daughter of Robert [FITZWALTER], 1st LORD FITZWALTER, by his 1st wife, to whom she became sole heir, Devorguille, 1st daughter and coheir of Sir John de Burgh, of Wakerly, Northants. He was slain at Bannockburn, 24 June 1314. It is not known whether his wife survived him; she was dead by 6 December 1315. [Complete Peerage VIII:529, XIV:468, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
