Gilbert was born in 1203 in Of, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales and his baptism took place in 1203 in St. David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales. Gilbert's father was William MARSHALL 4th Earl PEMBROKE and his mother was Isabel de CLARE COUNTESS OF PEMB. His paternal grandparents were John "the Marshall" FITZGILBERT and Sibyl de SALISBURY; his maternal grandparents were Richard Fitzgilbert de CLARE Earl of Pembroke, Strongbow" and Eva (Aoife) macmurogh kavanagh. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Walter, William, Richard, Anselm, Margaret, Maud, Joan, Isabel, Sibyl and Eve. He was the second youngest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 38 on June 27th, 1241 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England. He was buried in Temple Church, London, Middlesex, England.-
