Herbert was born in 1160. Herbert's father was Herbert FitzHerbert II and his mother was Lucy of Hereford Lady of Blaen Llyfni. His paternal grandparents were Herbert FitzHerbert and Julianna Corbet; his maternal grandparents were Miles de Pitres III Earl of Hereford and Sybil De Neufmarche. He had two brothers named Matthew and Peter. He was the oldest of the three children.-
