General Notes

Hugh was a man of considerable importance in the Pais de Caux, in Normandy. He had four sons, Hugh, Roger, Renaud, and Robert. Hugh, the eldest son, was like his father, a knight, and from him descended the Corbets of France. Renaud, the third son, was the ancestor of the Corbets of Flanders. Roger and Robert, the second and fourth sons, accompanied their father in the expedition of William the Conqueror, and obtained from that monarch large possessions, chiefly in Shropshire, where their relation, Roger de Montgomery, earl of Shrewsbury, was their patron and lord paramount.
