Richard was born in 1162 in Tunbridge Castle, Kent, England. Richard's father was Earl of Hertford Roger De Clare Earl of Hertford and his mother was Maud (Matilda) De Saint Hillary. His paternal grandparents were Lord of Clare Richard FitzGilbert De Clare Lord of Clare and Alice (Adeliza) De Meschines; his maternal grandparents were James De Saint Hillary and Aveline De Hesding. He had a brother and three sisters, named Roger, Elena, Mabel FitzPatrick and Eveline (Aveline). He was the second oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Ralph, William V, Cecily and Avice (Agnes). He died at the age of 56 on December 30th, 1218.General Notes
