Her paternal grandparents were Lord of Clare Richard FitzGilbert De Clare Lord of Clare and Alice (Adeliza) De Meschines; her maternal grandparents were James De Saint Hillary and Aveline De Hesding. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Roger, Mabel FitzPatrick and Eveline (Aveline). She was the oldest of the five children.
