James was born about 1305 in Knocktopher Castle, Arklow, Wicklow, Ireland.  James' father was Edmund le Botiller , 6th Butler, Ear of Carrick and his mother was Joan FitzGerald.  His paternal grandparents were Theobald le Botiller , 4th Butler and Joan FitzJohn; his maternal grandparents were John FitzGerald , 1st Earl of Kildare and Blanche de la Roche.  He was an only child.  He died in Moyalvi, Tipperary, Ireland.  He was buried in Gowran, Kilkenny, Ireland.


James' family with Eleanor de Bohun

‌James and Eleanor de were married in a religious ceremony on October 17th, 1327 in Knaresborough, Yorkshire, England.  They had a son and a daughter, named James and Petronella (Pernel).
