His paternal grandparents were Theobald le Botiller , 2nd Butler and Joan de Joan de; his maternal grandparents were Richard de Burgh , Lord of Connaught and Hodierna de Gernon. He was an only child. The 4th Butler fought against the Mortimers at Evesham, sat in the Irish Parliaments of Edward I and campaigned under that commanding leader in Scotland and Wales, before dying at the relatively advanced age of about 43 and leaving eight sons and two daughters by his widow, Joan, grand-daughter of Geoffrey, Earl of Essex, Justiciar of England.
