(c) From his [Maurice's] 2nd son, Maurice, descend the Berkeleys of Stoke Gifford, co. Gloucester (Lords Botetourt), the Berkeleys of Stratton, Cornwall (Lords Berkeley of Stratton) and the Berkeleys of Pyll, of which families the last is now (1911) represented in the male line by Viscount Portman.  [Complete Peerage II:129 note (c]]

(b) It has hitherto been stated that he [Maurice's nephew Maurice] was knighted in Scotland in 1337, when aged 7!, and was fighting abroad some years later, but J. H. Round points out that a footnote in Wrottesley's "Crecy and Calais", p. 196, explains that he has been confused with his father's younger brother, Maurice, who fought at Crecy, was at the siege of Calais, and d. 12 Feb 1346/7. The following post to SGM, 4 Aug 2002, by Douglas Richardson, states that many sources are wrong in naming Maurice's wife as Margaret, daughter of Maurice Berkeley of Uley.  In fact Maurice, the husband himself, is of Uley.  I am keeping Margaret as another wife, complete with sources, even though she was probably not his wife & didn't even exist:

John Smyth's book, The Berkeley Manuscripts : the Lives of the Berkeleys, vol. 1 (1883), pp. 245-254 includes information on the life and career of Maurice de Berkeley, Knt., a hero at the battle of Crecy in 1346.  Although I don't have Smyth's material in front of me, I believe that Mr. Smyth identified Maurice's wife as Margaret, daughter and heiress of Maurice de Berkeley, of Uley, co. Gloucester.  Smyth was evidently mistaken as to both the wife's name and her parentage.  Maurice de Berkeley's wife appears in the records regularly as Margery, not Margaret.  Also, I've never found any evidence which supports the parentage Smyth assigns her.

Rather, it appears that Sir Maurice de Berkeley actually married by papal dispensation dated 29 Dec. 1331 Margery de Vere, they being related in the 4th degree of kindred [Reference: Calendar of Entries in the Papal Registers, 2 (1895): 368.  Unfortunately, Mr. Smyth never saw this dispensation, as it was published a few years after his book came out.  To my knowledge, no one has linked this dispensation to Sir Maurice de Berkeley, of Uley, and his wife, Margery, before this time.

As to Margery de Vere, it would appear she was a hitherto unnoticed daughter of Alphonse de Vere, Knt., of Great Hormead, co. Hertford and Aston Sandford, co. Buckingham, by Joan, said to be a daughter of Richard Foliot, Knt.  As to Maurice and Margery's common kinship, I count them to be related in the 3rd and 4th degrees of kindred through the Zouche family (if Alphonse de Vere's grandmother was Lora la Zouche), as well as in the 4th and 5th degrees of kindred through a common descent from the Quincy family.

The following immigrants descend from Sir Maurice de Berkeley and his wife, Margery de Vere, as follows:

1. Jane, Frances, & Katherine Deighton

2. Jane Haviland

1. MAURICE DE BERKELEY, Knt., of Uley, Elberton, Kings Weston, Rockhampton, Stoke Gifford, co. Gloucester, Kingston Seymour, Somerset, Milston and Brigmerston (in Milston), co. Wilts, etc., Steward of the Duchy of Aquitaine, younger son.  He married by papal dispensation dated 29 Dec. 1331 (they being related in the 4th degree of kidnred) MARGERY DE VERE, evidently daughter of Alphonse de Vere, Knt., of Aston Sandford, co. Buckingham, and Great Hormead, co. Hertford, by Joan, said to be a daughter of Richard Foliot, Knt.  His lands were seized by King Edward II when his father rebelled against the king and the Despensers.  With his elder brother, Thomas, he pillaged Despenser property.  He had restitution of his lands after the fall of the Despensers.  He served King Edward III in France, was created a knight banneret in 15 Edw. III, and fought at the battle of CrÈcy in 1346.  SIR MAURICE DE BERKELEY was at the siege of Calais, where he died testate 12 Feb. 1346/7.  His memory is commemorated in the great east window of Gloucester Cathedral in the display of shields of the knights who fought in the CrÈcy and Calais campaigns of 1346 and 1347.  His widow died 21 May 1351.
