Joan de was born in 1248 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.  Joan de's father was William III de Ferrers , 5th Earl of Derby and her mother was Margaret de Quincy.  Her paternal grandparents were William II de Ferrers , 4th Earl of Derby and Agnes of Chester , Lady of Chartley; her maternal grandparents were Roger de Quincy , 2nd Earl of Winchester and Helen of Galloway. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert de, William IV, Elizabeth de, Agnes de and Berta de.  She was the third youngest of the six children. She had five half-sisters named Isabel de, Agnes de, Maud (Matilda) de, Eleanor de and Joan de.  She died in St Augustine Priory, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.


Joan de's first family with Thomas II "The Wise" 1st Baron de Berkeley

‌Joan de and Thomas II "The Wise" 1st Baron de were married in a religious ceremony in 1267.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Maurice II "Magnanimous" 2nd Baron de, Thomas III de and Margaret de.
