Walter was born about 1177 in Bramber Castle, Sussex, Eng. Walter's father was Lord William III de Braose and his mother was Maud (Matilda) de Saint Valery. His paternal grandparents were Baron William II de Braose and Bertha de Gloucester; his maternal grandparents were Bernard de St Valery and Bertha FitzWalter de Gloucester. He had twelve brothers and six sisters, named Robert, Roger, Thomas, Lord William IV (The Younger), Hugh, Giles, Henry, Reginald, Bernard, John, Fulk, Philip, Flandrina, Maud, Joan, Laurette, Margaret and Eleanor. He was the nineth oldest of the nineteen children.-
