Eleanor was born about 1185 in Bramber, Sussex, Eng. Eleanor's father was Lord William III de Braose and her mother was Maud (Matilda) de Saint Valery. Her paternal grandparents were Baron William II de Braose and Bertha de Gloucester; her maternal grandparents were Bernard de St Valery and Bertha FitzWalter de Gloucester. She had thirteen brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Roger, Thomas, Walter, Lord William IV (The Younger), Hugh, Giles, Henry, Reginald, Bernard, John, Fulk, Philip, Flandrina, Maud, Joan, Laurette and Margaret. She was the third youngest of the nineteen children.-
