Thomas was born in 1834. Thomas' father was Thomas R. Gheen and his mother was Ann Shaw. His paternal grandparents were Thomas R. Gheen and Hannah Pence; his maternal grandparents were Hugh Shaw and Elizabeth Finley. He had five brothers and six sisters, named David W,, William Joseph, John, George M., Jesse A., Hannah A., Mary, Jane, Susannah, Sara Belle and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the twelve children.-
