Lucy was born about 1730 in All Hallow's Parish, Anne Arundel, MD, USA.1 Lucy's father was Nicholas Gassaway and her mother was Elizabeth Hawkins. Her paternal grandparents were John Gassaway and Elizabeth Lawrence. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Nicholas, Thomas, James, Ann, Elizabeth, Susanna, Hannah and Mary. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Benjamin, Richard, Robert, Sarah and Rachael.
