John was born about 1674 in Anne Arundel, MD, USA.1 John's father was Nicholas Gassaway and his mother was Anne Besson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Gassaway and Anne Collingwood; his maternal grandparents were Captain Thomas Besson and Hester Caplin. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Nicholas, Thomas, Anne, Hester, Jane and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the seven children. "...died intestate. His widow, Elizabeth, was granted letters
of administration 10 Aug 1698 with Richard Galloway and William
Richardson as her security. warranty was granted to John
Chappell and John Gaile to appraise the estate....inventory
recorded 20 Oct 1698, but the estate was not settled.
Elizabeth married John Rigbie ...an infant daughter named
Elizabeth...her [Elizabeth Rigbie's] husband, Peter Galloway,
...assumed administration of the estate....27 Jan 1717"
