John Nelson Varner 
John Nelson was born on September 6th, 1843 in Barnesville, Belmont County Ohio.1 John Nelson's father was John "Johnny" Varner Jr and his mother was Irena Emma Andrews. His paternal grandparents were John Varner and Sarah Moore; his maternal grandparents were Richard Andrews and Polly Bailey. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Richard Lane, William Henry, Samuel Colson, Philip Mason Thomas, Joseph Wilson, Sarah Ann, Barbara Ellen, Rhoda Jane, Maria Emily, Malinda Elma and Axiah Emily. He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 79 on April 25th, 1923 in Siloam Springs, Benton County, Arkansas.1 General Notes

Civil War Vet Co A, 31st Regt, 1st Iowa Vols. He fought under General Sherman from Mississippi i to Georgia in the famous "March to the Sea". John's cousin, Joseph (son of Isaac Varner's) , enlisted with John. John was discharged on June 27, 1865 due to sunstroke and rheumatism . He and his wife moved to Kansas then to Jasper County Missouri and finally to Perry Count y Oklahoma. At the time of his death he lived with his son George.
