Mary was born in 1724 in Charles County, Maryland.1   Mary's father was John Semmes and her mother was Mary Higdon.  Her paternal grandparents were Marmaduke Semmes and Fortune Watson; her maternal grandparents were John Higdon and Millicent. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Claiborne, Anne and Rebecca.  She was the youngest of the five children.
